Achieving Good Dental Health Can Be Easier than You Think

Know How To Keep Teeth Clean When Wearing Braces

Braces are the best way to straighten teeth but can cause issues with your oral health if you aren't careful.  It is important to know how to clean your teeth when wearing braces to avoid potential problems. Just follow these tips for great oral health.

Use The Correct Toothbrush

You may have a toothbrush style that you like, but it may not work best for cleaning around braces.  You should consider getting an interdental toothbrush. It is a special brush that looks similar to a scrub brush since it has bristles on a thin wire that are designed to go around the wires and brackets on braces.

Keeping teeth clean when wearing braces is crucial to your oral health.  Braces can easily cause food to get trapped around brackets and wires, which can lead to tooth decay if you are not brushing your teeth properly.  You should be using your interdental toothbrush every time you brush your teeth to ensure you are getting all of the food particles out.

Use The Correct Floss

In addition to using the right toothbrush, you need to use the right floss.  Flossing can be impossible to do when those wires are in the way. You will need a special tool in order to get between your teeth, which is known as a dental floss threader.  You can use if to push normal dental floss underneath the metal wires, letting you get those spaces between your teeth free of bacteria.

Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash is another way to clean those spaces around the brackets.  Thankfully, there is no special tool or mouthwash needed, you just need to incorporate it into your oral health routine.  Swish some mouthwash around your mouth for about 30 seconds before you spit it out, and chances are that you will see some food particles come out with it that you would have normally missed.

Visit Your Dentist

Even though you're visiting your orthodontist to take care of your braces and make adjustments, you should still make regular appointments with your dentist for cleaning and inspections.  Your orthodontist is mainly going to be concerned with how your braces are working and isn't going to check for other problems in your mouth during your appointments.

Keep making those semi-annual dental appointments to ensure you are taking care of your oral health in the right way.  With these tips in mind, things should go smoothly during your dental checkup.
