Achieving Good Dental Health Can Be Easier than You Think

Four Myths About Root Canals

If your dentist has told you that you are in need of a root canal, it's important to take him seriously. The reason for this is that root canals can seriously fix any issues that you may be having with your teeth or gums. However, many people avoid root canals because of the myths surrounding them. That's why it's important to know what the top four myths of root canals are:

  1. A Root Canal is Not Needed if You Don't Have a Tooth Ache: Many people find themselves in disbelief when their dentist suggests a root canal because their teeth have not been hurting. However, just because your dentist has suggested a root canal does not mean that you should be experiencing any discomfort at all. In fact, it's more common to not feel anything there at all since root canals are mostly needed once the tooth has died. Most likely this is the case since infection has become so bad that the tooth has simply become worn and the nerves are no longer there because of the spread of infection. At this point, a root canal is needed to prevent infection from spreading to other teeth.
  2. A Root Canal is Painful: Another reason people avoid root canals is because they believe it will be an extremely painful treatment. However, this is not the case, especially if you talk to your dentist about your concerns. Your dentist can work with you to provide the right form of anesthesia that will ensure you do not feel any kind of pain during treatment. Plus, you will receive medications for afterwards to help you deal with any discomfort that comes with healing from the treatment.
  3. A Root Canal is Only a Temporary Treatment: Another common misconception is that root canals are only a temporary treatment. Why would you want to go through treatment for something that is only temporary? This is not the case when it comes to dealing with a root canal since these are actually long lasting treatments and will continue to preserve the tooth, especially if you have the tooth covered with a crown.
  4. A Tooth Extraction is a Better Option: Tooth extractions actually aren't the better option since this can lead to more expensive dental costs in the long run. First off, you will need to replace that tooth completely and, unless you have a dental implant inserted, tooth replacements only last up to 15 years. Plus, if the tooth is not replaced, you are going to have to deal with tooth shifting.

When you know these four myths surrounding root canals, you can see why your dentist's suggestion for getting a root canal done is definitely the best option. For more information, contact a local dentist, such as David B Anderson, DDS, PC.
